The Implant Procedure
Getting a dental implant requires an investment of time and patience, including multiple visits to our office. If you are considering dental implants, the process will look something like this:
- Consultation and Imaging: A detailed assessment using advanced imaging to determine the best placement strategy. (No referral needed to start the process)
- Implant Placement: A titanium or ceramic post is surgically placed in the jawbone. The process is pain-free, as we use local anesthesia to numb the area. If needed, we may also use sedation to relieve any anxiety and relax you during the procedure.
- Healing and Integration: Over the next several months, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone, creating a secure and stable base for the restorations that will eventually be attached. This fusion process is called osseointegration.
- Restoration: Once osseointegration is complete and the area is healed, your general dentist will attach a crown, bridge, or dental prosthetic to the implant, resulting in a full set of natural-looking, fully functional teeth.
Throughout the process, Adams & Whitt Periodontics, PSC coordinates closely with your dentist to achieve the best possible outcome.

“For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.”
Dental Implant FAQs
Am I a candidate for dental implants?
Most healthy adults with one or more missing teeth are candidates. Even if you’ve experienced some bone loss, options like bone grafting can support successful implant placement. Some people may not be ideal candidates for tooth implants, including individuals with autoimmune or blood clotting disorders or uncontrolled diabetes. Drs. Adams and Whitt will evaluate your medical history and overall health to determine whether tooth replacement with dental implants is appropriate for you.
Are dental implants permanent?
Dental implants are the closest thing to permanent tooth replacement available. With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last decades. For many patients, they last a lifetime. Many patients achieve long-term success without requiring additional treatment.
Do dental implants hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is generally well-tolerated. Patients often report less discomfort than expected, with post-surgical soreness managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief. We also offer oral and IV sedation options to help relax our patients.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
Coverage varies by plan. Some insurance policies may cover some of the procedures, particularly the restoration phase. Our team will help review and maximize your benefits and explore financing options if needed.
Can I get implants if I’ve lost bone?
Yes. Dr. Adams and Dr. Whitt specialize in managing cases involving bone loss. There are several options we can pursue in these situations, including bone grafting to build up the area before placing implants and the use of specially designed implants. Dental implants are suitable for many patients, even those with reduced bone volume.
